     2004 JY15 Atlantic Coast Championships

Seventeen boats participated in the JY15 Atlantic Coast Championships hosted by the Breakwater Yacht Club in Sag Harbor, NY on May 22nd and 23rd.  On the first day of racing, the forecast called for winds of 15-20 knots, but the fleet never even saw 10 knots of breeze the entire afternoon! The skies were overcast and temperatures were in the mid-60's.  The race committee did an excellent job of conducting six races, all windward-leewards in shifty conditions (3-5 knots with puffs to 7-8 knots and one 180 deg windshift).  Following the day's racing, Breakwater YC hosted a fabulous barbeque which included grilled fresh tuna- loved by all who tried it.

The second day of racing started out with foggy, cool conditions and no wind.  After a postponement, a very light breeze came in and the sun made an appearance for the first time that weekend.  Three races were held on Sunday.  The last race was especially trying on the fleet as there was less than one knot of wind, but we all enjoyed the sun.

Paul-Jon and Anne Patin won first place, beating Jay Vann and his daughter Madison by one point.  This was Madison Vann's first regatta, not bad for a seven year old.  She also beat her Grandpa Chris Vann and crew Amy Williams, who placed 8th.  Coming in 3rd place were Richard Skeen and crew Jody Sutter.  Also out on the course were four high school sailors from the Breakwater YC sailing program, Chantal Bourel & Dave Hess and Kyle Mcardle & Kristen Hess.  Great job!

For this regatta there was also a fleet competition.  A minimum of three boats from a fleet were required to be eligible.  Two fleets participated, Fleet #2 from Breakwater YC and Fleet #100 from Niantic Bay YC.  The Vann, Vann, and Van Kempen team from Niantic Bay YC took home the winning burgee.

Detailed results for this regatta are posted in the results section of the regatta table.

Thank you Lee Oldak for organizing a great event and thank you to all those from Breakwater YC who made it a success, we look forward to returning next year.
