Arabesque wins Duck Island Overnight By Mark & Claudia Kondracky
Arabesque, owned by Bob & Sue Bruno won the overnight race which took place last night. The race was from Duck Island to Block Island. They credit their winning to half baked cake like brownies. The race start was deleted due to NO DAMN WIND. Mike Sinisi, PRO, said that at one point he was going to start the sequence and let the boats drift over the line. Fortunately a 7 knot breeze developed from the Southwest. After the start near SW breakwater two of the boats elected to go north of the island to get out of the current. Off of Old Saybrook the wind died testing the patience of the competitors. Mark Dixon, owner of Nunnehi, reported seeing winds at the highest of 13 knots but only for a brief amount of time. There was also an endurance part of this race. Many boats could opt to round the finish line and sail back home. With the light air and Hurricane Charley on his way, Arabesque started out to do this, but put the motor on about two hours into it. This is Duck Island's second year of having this race to Block Island and participation continues to grow. Duck Island had 14 boats signed up. The Mudheads had four boats and Patchaug Yacht Club had one. A special thanks goes out to Ken Maxwell who took the times at Block Island. |
