                   Fisher's Island Round Island Race
                                by Mark Kondracky

Over ninety boats came out for the 48th Round Island Race hosted by Fisher's Island Yacht Club.  The race, which dates back to the teens, hosted eight classes from a one design class of Ensigns up to a S&S 77 with a rating of - 126. The canvas class boasted 19 boats.  The race committee commented that they plan to divide this class up into two.
The racers had fair winds in this the third leg of the Island Cup.  The race started in Fisher's Island Sound and leaving marks to port in a counter clockwise course.  After a short beat and reach the crews set their chutes for the run down the back side of the island.  With a foul current, boats kept as close to the shore as possible.  The crew of Maximus reported executing 17 jibes.  Many boats reported numerous jibes between the large swells on the back of the island.
The Ensign class was won by Sagacious, owned by Bob Geary.  Sagacious finished in the middle of the pack at the Ensign Nationals.  Bob commented that he didn't care for windward leewards but this circumnavigation seemed to suit him just fine.  He started out near the committee boat and worked the right side of the first beat.
Jolly Mon, owned by Sara Porter & George Loveday, won her class and was the top Fisher's Island boat.  As a result they won the perpetual trophy donated by Porter's father. Class F was won by Remedy owned by John Fries.  As a result Remedy won all three legs of the Island Cup, winning her class.  John plans to race in the Thundermug to tune up for Key West.  He is hoping that some of the Evelyn's from Western Long Island Sound will travel to Westbrook for the event.
At the start of Class G, Bottle Rocket pulled off a great port tack start at the pin, but it was Kite who topped the class.  The start of class H was not for the faint of heart.  Maximus and Secret jockeyed for a pin end start on starboard.  At the gun, the boats were so close that a strand of dental floss wouldn't fit between them.  A few hours later they crossed the line less than a second apart.  Now that's great racing.  One More Time, won the class, perhaps aided by extra wind from some loud talking.
After a great day of racing, the club's volunteers hosted a great party.  Liquid refreshment, kebabs and oysters, rounded out the menu.  The racers enjoyed the food and music while comparing who jibed the most at the back of the island.
On a final note, Maximus gave a tow to Mast Transit II while they repaired their outboard on route to Niantic.  As a result the crew of Maximus were tossed some cold ones. We had a great time at the party, and with only one designated helmsmen, we didn't need more any beer. We had a short supply of aspirin.
