The Milford Yacht Club hosted the Last Chance Regatta on September 25, 2004. This article is by Nick Amendola aboard Maxiums.
The Milford Yacht Club Race Committee did a great job getting us started quickly. Two boats tangled themselves on the pin end and dragged it several feet before realizing it was even there. Saturday wind forcast was calling for light and variable winds below 10 knots. At the start we saw true winds of over 15 which we didn't expect. I was hoping that it didn't increase because I left my number 3 in the car. The MYC RC sent us to Housatonic River back to start then to Housatonic to Pond Point then to the finish. Maximus got off to a very slow start and I was hoping to get by Skibereen, the other Mumm 36. He tacked on me 3 times on the first up wind leg, but I loved ever minute of it. I finally managed to get out in front and it was neck and neck as to who rounded first. Dr. Evil was next around and then a well sailed Antrim 27. Finish positions didn't change much in Class A, but Dr. Evil corrected out on all of us. In Class B, Konrad LaGarde's team on Relentless, a well sailed J-27, took the gun and corrected out to win the regatta. They had a bad start and a upwind fight for the lead around Housatonic over Savage, another J-27. Relentless rounded behind Wasabi (J-29). Not far behind was Pat Collins's Kari who was fighting it out with One -Up. Kari had some trouble with an override that had to be cut which helped One-Up to secure second place. With Wasabi rounding first at pond point to a sprint to the finish Relentless went right and Wasabi went left. Relentless was out of the current and managed to take the gun with the win. The Non-Spinnaker Class Summary by Mike Mollow |
|

|
I figured I'd submit a follow-up article for the non-spinnaker division of the Last Chance Regatta (Day 1) The MYC committee boat sent the non-spinnaker division to the Housatonic, then to Pond Point and back to start for an upwind finish. At the start, Lou Roberts on Windsong II port- tacked everyone to go right. Everyone else tacked over as soon as possible to avoid the adverse tide. Surrender led the way around Pond Point, followed closely by the two C&C yachts, Paikea and Sabre Dance . Paikea went left and got battered by the current while Sabre Dance went very close to shore and had a come-from-behind second place showing. Silver Bullet corrected to third, while the Wauquiez, Surrender got the gun and first.

Day Two
After the 1 hour delay, the wind had picked up to a steady 8 knots from WSW. Class D was sent to the Housatonic and back to start twice. Slingshot was able to point a little higher than everyone else and never relinquished the lead. She was followed close behind by Paikea and Surrender who crossed the finish line within one second of each other. Surrender made an attempt to pass the C&C numerous times on the last leg, but couldn't do it. She corrected to second and Paikea to third. Mike Mollow |
