Mudhead Leukemia Cup Regatta by ECSS staff
Gray skies and a shifty Northeasterly Wind greeted the participants of the Leukemia Cup. Luckily the heavy rain held off and the 60 boat fleet with two racing circles had a great day of racing. The Mudheads did a great job of keeping the participants informed via the radio, adjusting the starting line, and of course running the races. The shifty winds, and tide combined to make for challenging racing. The course was windward, leeward twice around. With the tide running down the line many boats tried for the boat end, and then tacked and went right. Fishers Island offered some protection from the Tide but there were some interesting eddies near Sea flower reef. In Class 5, Euphoria and Salude were having some great tacking duels. The first race saw Salude edging out Euphoria by 0.8 seconds. In fact the first four finishers in that class corrected out with less than a minute difference. In the second race, Euphoria did a jibe set and went towards Fishers Island, Salude went right, and had less pressure. Euphoria passed her and went on to win the race and series. Class three saw Nunnehi and Looney Tunes duke it out. Both boats scored 4 points, but Looney Tunes had a quicker elapsed combined time and took class honors. The J-24, Maybe scored two bullets in the her class. In the second race, the J boats went left on the first beat, so that when they came back on port they would be pushed up to the mark by the current. This strategy seemed to work pretty well. Class 1 had mostly Mumm's and the Hot boats. Bergendal's One More Time came in third the first race but stormed back to win the second, and edge out Ripple by one point. Class 2 saw Lindy take two bullets to win the class followed by Snowbird. Class 7 had tight racing with fractions of seconds separating the competitiors. Petard won Followed by Mass Transit II. Surrender, sailed by Mike Mollow came in fourth. Mike found the conditions challenging (he hails from Brandford) but enjoyed the competion. Silent Passage edged out Irish Lady in Class 8. Of course Irish Lady won the party by having a great time, and singing with the Band. As usual the party had great food, music and dancing and of course all for a good cause. |
