This year the US Offshore Championship for the Lloyd Phoenix trophy was hosted by the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. The event features 10 teams from each of the US sailing areas, and one team from the Naval Academy. Five races in light air were held on the Chesapeake in Navy 44's. Representing our area (area B) was Bruce Kuryla of Milford. Bruce owns Secret, a Nelson Marek 41, and competes in numerous ECSA events. This is the second time that Bruce and company qualified for this prestigious event. During the first competition, food poisoning and snagged lobster pots hampered their performance. This time despite difficult light air conditions, Bruce and team placed third overall. After the second race the team was in first place. The team was poised to take first in the fourth race, but with light winds, and power boat wakes, they were passed by seven boats. (writers note: having raced against Navy 44's in Bermuda, light air is not their forte) Congratulations to Bruce and team for representing our area so well. |
