S.C.A.P.  Gets People in Wheelchairs into Sailboats by Andrew Connal

		Today, there are more and more programs becoming available for people with disabilities.  These programs are popping up all over the world.  However, the people living the in the area of Westbrook Ct have had one all along in the sailing community.  This program is Sail Connecticut.  In this program, people have the opportunity to enjoy sailing no matter what their background is.  People with disabilities have the ability to meet new friends that take them out and show them what it is like to be out on Long Island Sound.  Unlike other programs, every one on board has the opportunity to handle the lines and steer the boat.  It is truly an experience that will not be forgotten. As a former sailing instructor  at Sail CT, I can truly say that this program is one that I will not forget.  To witness the enjoyment that the individuals that come out have is amazing.  Luckily, I have not been the only person that gets to experience this event.  All of the volunteers that come out to assist with the activities that go on get the same joy.     The Program is based at Brewers Pilots Point Marina.  We have three boats, an Ensign, and two Freedoms.  The boats have specilized equipment and are easily handled.  People with disablilities might have to use a joystick to control their wheelchairs.  Give them some instruction, and a tiller with just a little weather helm and they get an adrenelin rush.  The freedom of slicing through the water is quite an experience.  The program can always use more volunteers, so if interested, check out their web page.
