                                Soverel 33 North American Championships
                                             by ECSS staff

Duck Island Yacht Club hosted the Soverel North Americans.  Three days of races, under perfect conditions tested the nine competitors. One of the boats came from North Carolina, two were from the New York area, and the remainder were from Long Island Sound.  With that many participants, Duck Island Yacht Club looked like "tent city" with campers and support vehicles (watch out for high tide).
Friday brought very shifty winds from the North.  The R.C. under direction from Tom Carse set windward leeward courses with a one mile beat.  Bushwacker led the fleet with 3 bullets the first day.  Wacko, sailed by Jim Condon was second after day one.
Saturday brought winds from the North west 5-10 knots.  Mark McCarthy (event organizer) bounced back from Friday to finish first for the day.  His boat Slainte finished first on Sunday to move up to third overall.  Bushwhacker's 5 bullets during the series gave her a two point win over Santana.  Many thanks to the numerous volunteers who organized a great event.  Also thanks to the sponsors including Kappa Sails, Sound Rigging and the Center for Better Health (after 12 races some sailors could use
some chiropractor work).
