The Governor's Trophy Race was a held on August 8 under bright and sunny skies with west wind in excess of 20 knots most of the afternoon. 40 boats were registered, 36 raced race one. Due to the rough seas (opposing wind and current) A second race was not held for Non-Spinnaker II. And only 21 boats from the other 4 classes started Race 2. Class One, the large spinnaker boats, was a close race between the first 3 trophy winners Some of the boats included in Class I were John Fries Evelyn 32 Remedy, Hugh O'Brien's ID35 Ripple, Coast Guard Academies Mumm 30 Hammer and Ron Levine's Hot Flash. Class 2, the smaller Spinnaker boats, was dominated by Moise Solomon's J24 Shockwave winning both races. 11 Ensigns came to the line with Bob Geary's Sagacious getting 4 points and Russ Carr's Swoose earned 5 for second place. Non-Spinnaker I was dominated by Dave Kelly's Mast Transit II. Non Spinnaker II saw Bill St. John in Irish Lady take the lead and stay there. |
